Rumer brings home stray puppy

The second of the two puppies found in the Walmart parking lot (the first, Happy, was adopted by Miley Cyrus) was just adopted by Rumer Willis.

“So happy she and her bro Happy can play together,” she tweeted. She also recently asked her fans on Twitter to help her name the dog.

The unnamed beagle-rottweiler puppy joins four other dogs in Rumer’s house, and she added, “we are crazy but I love it haha… Big happy family with 4… Going on 5 dogs!”

Good luck to Rumer and her puppy. I think these recent Walmart puppy adoptions are going to cause a lot of people to consider adopting (and not buying) a puppy themselves.

Something Good Comes From Walmart! – On Tuesday Miley Cyrus brought home a Rottweiler-Beagle mix puppy that was abandoned in a parking lot.

She tweeted, “He was left in a box in front of Walmart… I don’t understand how people can be so cruel. That’s why we named him Happy.” (Maybe it was also inspired by those smiley faces that accompany the sale items at walmart?)

Looks like Happy will join Floyd, Ziggy, and Lila as the fourth dog in her family.

Miley’s boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, was seen bringing back a dog bed and more food on wednesday, and now we know why.

Nice to see stars like Miley Cyrus open their homes to stray dogs. (but still shopping at Walmart… really?!)

Obama eats dog?

Political Dog Fight: Starting with accounts of how Mitt Romney famously packed their family dog on the roof of their car for a trip to Canada, (who does that!) the “dog war” in the 2012 election is still heating up. (Dogs against Romney recently recorded their 50,000th Facebook friend!)

Recently, attention was brought to the fact that Obama tasted dog meat as a poor youth in Indonesia, although Romney later proposed that the election should be about, “jobs not dogs.”

Well, it’s clear that dogs are already playing a role in opinion poles for this year’s election. Look for lots of photo ops of these guys hugging dogs in the near future…

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) recently revealed to David Letterman about her Dachshunds role in the bullying that her brothers, Ben & Blaine, subjected her to.

She told Dave, “When I was doing the gymnastics phase, they used to pin my feet back behind my head – I can’t do this anymore – and then they would get our dachshunds and put peanut butter all over my face,” she said. “We had three dachshunds and then the dogs would go crazy licking… And then they’d shut the door, lock me in the basement with dachshunds.”

Letterman later added, “I’m going to make two calls, Jennifer. The first one will be to Amnesty International, and the second one will be to Dick Cheney. I think we have something here. It might replace water boarding, that little dachshund deal.” (Watch the interview here)

Well, it looks like she turned out OK. Speaking of The Hunger Games, I’m thinking the characters might inspire a whole new group of dog names. (Remember how Twilight made “Bella” a popular pet name?) Here are some good potential dog or cat names inspired by The Hunger Games: Katniss, Effie, Cinna, Gale, Glimmer, Primrose, Peeta, Clove, Thresh, Octavia, Flavius, Rue, Venia, & Cato. Also, I think “Caesar Flickerman,” or “President Snow,” might just work for a cat!

On Wednesday we got a rare peek at Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s Bulldog, Jacques, when Zahara, Shiloh, and Maddox took him for a walk in New Orleans.

Although their dog is usually out of the spotlight, Jacques has been seen in various locations around the world & joined Angelina in a recent 60 minutes interview.

He was also reportedly dog-sat by Johnny Depp while Jolie filmed, “The Tourist” in Venice in 2009. Depp later told David Letterman that Jacques slept with him and was the smelliest dog he’d ever met. Anyway, great looking dog!

Native UK Dog Breeds at Risk – Well, maybe it’s not as dramatic as Noah choosing which species would survive the great flood, but it’s a trend that would certainly make Darwin lift an eyebrow.

According to recent Kennel Club statistics, Britain’s native dog breeds at now at risk in part because demand has shifted to more fashionable breeds showcased by celebrities.

25 dog breeds including the formerly popular English Setter (England’s oldest dog breed) are now considered vulnerable (extinction risk) because of low registration numbers.  Registrations for English Setters have dropped by a third since last year, (only 234 registrations in 2011) while registrations for breeds like the Chihuahua have increased by a quarter.

This demand for celebrity dogs can also give breeds whose numbers are dwindling a boost. Consider the fact that registrations for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi (a favorite of the Royal Family) soared by over 130% after the Royal Wedding in 2011, enabling the breed to be taken off the vulnerable list. (let’s hope they are still cared for in a few years)

In a related twist, I couldn’t help but notice another headline in today’s news: Sumatran Elephants close to extinction. Maybe we could get Paris Hilton to walk an elephant down Rodeo drive, causing THEIR numbers to rebound!

Ben Flajnik, aka “The Bachelor,” was happy to bring his dog on a date in his hometown of Sonoma, California. Apparently his dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named, “Scotch,” (why would a winemaker name his dog, Scotch!?) approved of date Courtney Robertson, but did begin to howl as Flajnik moved in for a kiss. “You’re ruining the moment, Buddy,” he replied to the dog.

When Courtney, a model, mentioned that Scotch was heavier than he looked, Ben replied, “He’s a little over 20 pounds… When he stays at Grandma’s house, he puts on a few lb’s.”

We’re hoping that Flajnik brings his dog on more dates, as no one is a better judge of true character than a dog!

Fergie & Josh Christmas Card – Like many of us, this year’s Christmas card from Fergie and Josh Duhamel features their dogs; in this case a caricature of their Dachshunds named Meatloaf and Zoe.

When asked by US Weekly what she wants for Christmas, Fergie replied, “For my dogs to use the bathroom outside!”

Nice touch that one of the dogs is writing, “Happy Holidays” in pee on snowman Josh. (well, at least they are outside!) In any event, the card is a nice contrast to the cold & obnoxious Kardashian card this year.

Looks like Fergie won’t be ringing in the new year with her wiener dogs this year, as she is due to be in LA hosting Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

Hugh Hefner & Crystal Harris Fight Over Custody of Puppy: Months after ending their engagement, Hugh Hefner and former fiancee, Crystal Harris, are still feuding over who gets to keep their puppy. Originally the dog was supposed to remain at the Playboy Mansion, but apparently Crystal is having second thoughts

Hefner told People Mag, “We both love the puppy. I told her if she wants to keep the ring and the Bentley, then maybe I can keep the puppy. I hope we will work it out.”

Adele & her Dachshund, Louie

Adele, who just had successful surgery on her vocal chord, was seen for the first time outside her London home with her dog; a Dachshund named, “Louie,” who was seen peeking out of his dog carrier.

The surgery reportedly went well, and Louie has reportedly been very supportive. The male dog was named after legendary singer, Louie Armstrong, but was actually almost named “Britney Spears.”

Adele says, “He was born on the night I went to see Britney Spears in London. I almost called him Britney even though he was a boy. But it only lasted a few hours until my hangover stopped.”
