Using a Code at Checkout
Most discounts at magazines.com are already reflected in their deeply discounted prices. However, they do offer a selection of magazines that are eligible for their $5 off promotion. There might also be seasonal offers that are usually specific to individual magazine titles. In any case, upon checkout (after logging in) you will see a small arrow saying, "gift card code or coupon code?" Click it, and it will open a box like this, with a field to type in your coupon code:

After typing in the coupon code, hit the "Apply to Order" button just beneath, and then you will see that the coupon code has either worked, or a message has appeared that it is invalid. If the code worked, you'll see it reflected in your order total (see right)
Shipping should always be free, so if anything besides "free" is listed in the box, don't proceed with the order. (call customer service) After submitting your order you will be offered one or more "exclusive deals" which offer you 4 free issues of a number of popular magazine titles. (they also have other free magazines.com issues and trade publications on-site) This is a good deal if you are disciplined enough to cancel the subscription after the free trial ends. If you don't, you will keep getting issues, and will have to begin paying for them.
Note that codes and discounts can't be combined, and restrictions apply to all codes. The most common misunderstanding is that magazines.com $5 coupons can be applied towards ALL subscriptions, when in fact these coupon codes are reserved for their ever-changing list of about 200 magazine titles. Often the current $5 off deal is a seasonal offer, and changes with the season. (example codes: springmags, summermags, fallmags, wintermags; all good for $5 off)
Discount Subscriptions - The internet is made up of hundreds of niches, and so is the world of magazines.com - There are subscriptions for literally everyone; whether you are an entrepreneur, sports fan, investor, cat-lover, or vegetarian, they has over 1500 subscriptions at a savings of up to 91% off the cover price before applying any additional discounts.
Also consider magazine subscriptions as a gift idea, especially the "Under $10" or "Under $25" sections which are a thoughtful gift for someone who you don't want to spend a lot of money on. They also have a "combo offers" section in which they pair two magazines for people with similar interests. (Like Inc magazine and Entrepreneur)
