Does Ellen DeGeneres Have a Habit of Giving Away Dogs?

The New York Post is reporting that Ellen DeGeneres‘ latest doggy debacle wasn’t the first time she’d passed along a pup she’d adopted.

A Los Angeles producer, Kerri Randles, says she gave DeGeneres a male mutt named Stormy two years ago who the talk-show queen quickly gave away to a member of her staff less than two months later.

She may have had it for much less time than that. I only say two months because that’s when I called to check on the dog and found out she no longer had it. I was totally shocked. I thought she was out of her mind.”

DeGeneres may have passed along several other dogs over the years. Howard Stern said on his Sirius show that he’d heard she had done this nine times before. Joking maybe? Who knows.

Viewers were shocked Tuesday when DeGeneres tearfully told her viewers that the Mutts & Moms agency had gone to her hairdresser’s house and confiscated the dog Ellen had adopted from the stylist. Mutts & Moms said she had signed a contract agreeing to return the dog only to the agency if she no longer wanted to care for it.

Randles said DeGeneres seemed a perfect pet owner at first, but she quickly discovered the daytime TV hostess was “neurotic and crazy.”

When Randles took Stormy to NBC studios to meet DeGeneres, she was “drilled” for four hours by the star, her assistants and the crew.

“Everyone on the show and in her entourage got themselves all involved,” Randles told Page Six’s Marianne Garvey. “They were all coming into the dressing room, playing with the dog as if it were a new extension of Ellen.”

DeGeneres finally decided to keep the dog for a few nights to see if he’d fit into her home. She suggested that Randles take the dressing room next door to “tell the dog privately that she’d be going home with Ellen.”

“I told her I’d already had a talk with the dog. She didn’t get my jokes,” said Randles.

When she called to check on the pup a few days later, DeGeneres told her she’d decided to keep it. “She acted like she was keeping it for life,” Randles recalled.

DeGeneres’ rep did not return calls by the NY Post.

Interesting! The last we checked/read, Ellen had two dogs, Pig and Wolf – has anyone heard her mention these two dogs on her show? Did she mention how well (or not) Iggy got along with her dogs? If what’s been reported is true, does this change your opinion about the Mutts and Moms situation?

Update: According to Ellen’s publicist, Kelly Bush, the comedienne was told Stormy was living in a car at the time Ellen rescued him. Bush claims Ellen offered to find a safe home for the dog. The following day, Ellen helped place Stormy in a better home.

If I remember correctly, she adopted a black and white short haired mutt who she named Lucy when her show first started.

I found it odd that she only kept the dog a couple of three weeks. I am sure your fact checkers will find this to be true.

Here is a link to a blurb about that dog Lucy.

I have also seen another on a board which I will try to post which says that she got rid of Lucy because she was too puppyish and rambunctious.

Here is the post:

Ellen kept this “beloved” dog for TEN days to allow it to adjust to her cats. She also dumped her last dog for being “puppyish” and “rambunctious” while a puppy.

I don’t condem Ellen for having to give away a dog that doesn’t get along with the family, but it seems she should give up on the dog adopting now. Seems like dogs are just not her thing.

Sounds like Ellen is setting herself up as a Foster home for needy animals. I do that also when a shelter has a D day animal that they feel can and should be placed into a loving home but it has just run out of time at the states expense. Fostering animals can be a heart wrenching undertaking. I fall deeply in love with each and every one of my fosters, which makes it both a joyful yet sad time when they find their forever homes. At current time, I have 8 fosters in my canine family who I took in with the understanding that the “Legitamate 501.3c” rescue asked me to take due to over crowding in their facility. They promised to pay the spay neuter fees and help with with food costs. I am not a 501.3c and pay for all my animal rescue vet and food needs myself. After two weeks of them in my care this “Legitamate” Rescue who recieves huge donations from local buisnesses and individuals now DENIES these beautiful dogs were ever in their shelter. They stuck me with the 700.00+ vet bills for the spays and neuters and vaccinations and they have stated that they would indeed take the dogs from me but only if I give them a 50.00 per dog fee to release them to them. PLEASE to not allow a 501.3c certificate to affect your decision to adopt from a rescue. Fat to many times once the organization achieves that status they feel its a liscence to do what ever they want. For those of us who are doing this for the love of the animals and for their welfare, it blackens the tides for the trie rescues in the world. Heh and as for the comment that Eleen is Neurotic for taking in dogs just to get “Rid” of them… Well I wish we had more neurotics like that in Rescue. As a Fellow Neurotic… WE ROCK :)

This is not a surprise to someone who’s run a proper rescue. I can tell that Ellen truly does love animals but, like most people, she’s ignorant and impulsive with them. She didn’t even give Iggy and her cats time to adjust to each other! Of course there’s going to be some minor spats when a new animal comes into the home! It’s an owner’s job to oversee the adjustment period carefully to make sure these minor spats don’t get more serious or injure any of the pets involved. And if she wanted a dog that would get along with her cats a terrier is not the first breed I would’ve chosen for her! Terriers are well known, to those that KNOW, to be rather bouncy, energetic, and sometimes annoying to other, more laid back pets. Even then all it often takes is proper management on the part of the owner. I have 4 dogs (ranging from a great dane all the way down to a small terrier), 3 cats, 2 cockatoos, a snake and a tarantula. They are all indoor pets and get along because I tell them they WILL get along! They’re all quite happy and spoiled and those that don’t like each other simply stay out of each other’s way.
