    Well not really, instead, PETA protesters dressed as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton held signs that said, “shelter dogs are dying and I don’t care” and “I buy dogs so shelter dogs die” on the streets in Hollywood to protest against the two who brought their purebred dogs from pet stores instead of adopting from shelters. The demonstration held outside the new PETA - Animal Birth Control billboard - on Sunset Boulevard, aims to raise awareness of the 400,000 homeless animals that are put to death in California’s shelters every year. Our favorite celebrity blog, TMZ has video of the event.

    According to PETA, for every dog or cat purchased from a breeder or pet store, another dog or cat on death row at an animal shelter must be killed. Director Daphna Nachminovitch added the following:

    Forget jail or rehab; these selfish stars should do a stint in an animal shelter, where they would witness the plight of dogs who end up there after being bought on an impulse.

    If you have a dog or cat or both, where did they come from and what’s your take on breeders, puppy mills and shelters?

      This is ridicolous!! I understand that people should be educated and they should NEVER buy a pet from a petstore (most of the petstore dogs come from puppy mills)! Yes, I agree with the fact that these two women should have bought a dog from a responsible breeder! However, I do not agree with PETA regarding adoption! If someone wants a particular/specific breed and wants to raise this specific breed from the puppywood stage, this person should not be pushed and/or obligated to adopt an adult dog or an animal that she/he does not want to!! many of the animals at the shelter come from petstores and puppimills anyway!! And it is extremely hard almost impossible to find a puppy Yorkshire terrier! I agree with the messages from the Human Society of the United States to promote responsible breeders, I DO NOT AGREE AT ALL with these PETA people!

      I have two dogs, Oliver and Emma, both with different stories.

      I got Oliver from a rescue when he was 3 months old. He and his brother were dropped off with the rescue by a breeder because they both had Parvo and the breeder did not want to pay to treat them. Both puppies were successfully treated by the rescue and adopted out. The rescue paid $5000 to treat them. The adoption price was $200. The rescue is obviously not in it for the money. Oliver is now 3 years old.
      Emma has a totally different story. She was found by her previous owner abandoned at the dog park. After around 2 years, the owner had medical problems due to childbirth where she had to have 2 related surgeries and could not keep up with a small child and her dog. I knew Emma from the dog park and she and Oliver were great playmates. I had been wanting to get a companion for Oliver but he is selective of his doggy friends. I offered to take Emma if her previous owner felt she needed to find her a new home. A month later she was with me and is now a great addition to my family.
      I would never buy a dog from a pet store. So many dogs need rescuing.

      I really believe that if celebs want to carry around a different dog each week they should consider carrying around a shelter dog for a week, then it going up for adoption… that way it had alot of publicity and photos sent around! Then the next week, new dog…. lol Then they’d actually be HELPING the dogs. Instead of having to commit to them since they cant do that.

      I have a beautiful Boston terrier. The love of my life :o}
      She was rescued from a puppymil (she was used to breed over and over).
      When she came to me, she was very tired and terrified of humans. Now she is AMAZING! Of course, the idea of pet stores makes me ill, because I KNOW that most come from puppy mills and I have seen, first hand, the harm that puppy mills cause! All the dogs in my family have been rescued and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are so loving, and happy to be loved!
      I understand wanting a specific breed, but please do the research. Choose a reputable breeder and really check out all the shelters in your area before making a choice. You never know who might be waiting for you at your local Humane Society!!!

      I TOTALLY agree with Alessia-PETA is being completely IDIOTIC when condemning breeders.

      A LOT of breeders treat their dogs better than ANY shelter. In fact, the shelters are just as bad as mills. I’ve visited multiple shelters, and all the dogs were outside with little protection from the weather, they were all lethargic, some sat in their own vomit, urine, and feces and the workers did NOTHING about it.

      However, you couldn’t so much as stop to PET a dog there without a worker in your face pressuring you to adopt it so they can make a buck-SURPRISE! Shelters make more money than most BREEDERS, people who actually CARE about their dogs and where they are going.

      I plan on buying a teacup yorkie sometime in the future from a reputable breeder and feel NO shame!
