The Game Plan director Andy Fickman got the shots he wanted from one of his leading men on the Westwood film set yesterday. And all it took was a little bacon.
Tubbs, an 8 1/2-year-old English bulldog who plays Spike, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s pet pooch in the Disney flick, had his Game face on…
during some pivotal scenes shot yesterday in Rock’s “luxury penthouse.”
“The crawl-out is more important than the sit-down at the end,” said Fickman, calling out to the cinematographer in the next room while studying Spike’s forlorn mug on the monitor.
“He’s so squeezable, isn’t he?” said the director. “Low maintenance, too, as far as actors go.”
Like Johnson, Tubbs has a couple of Hollywood handlers - Eadie McMullan and Trish Peebles of Gentle Jungle - who are at the ready with treats, snacks, dog bowl, Poland Springs water and a towel.
“Watch out for his spots,” said Trish, as the Track petted the celebrity canine in a way most women fantasize about handling his co-star. “It’s make-up.”
Apparently, Spike’s stand-in and stunt double - Tank - has spots, so the Tubbs-y one has to hit the make-up trailer every day.
“They used Tank once at the football stadium where Spike had to do a lot of running,” said Eadie. “As you can see, Tubbs isn’t a real athlete.”
Well, that doesn’t make him a bad dog - even The Rock had his cousin Tanoai Reed do a lot of the on-screen running and jumping for him!
And like his leading man, Tubbs has a stellar resume - Ladykillers, Six Feet Under, The Gilmore Girls and a Purina Dog Chow TV spot.
“But this is, by far, his biggest role,” said Eadie, adding that the producers sniffed out “every bulldog in the business” before they took Tubbs.
“We took one look at his face and said, ‘That’s Spike,’ ” said Fickman, chiding the Track for spending too much time writing about “The Game Plan” hunky humans like Dwayne and local jock Brian White and missing the real star of the show!
